Using Mugwort for Dreamwork

Mugwort… it sounds like something from a Harry Potter movie, right?

That’s what I thought when I first heard the name.

But, actually, people have been using Mugworth for thousands of years as an herb to help them heal mentally, spiritually, physically, and emotionally.

Today, we are going to talk about using Mugwort to help us with our dreamwork.

What is Dreamwork?

Dreamwork is a broad term describing the exploration and incorporation of dreams in psychotherapy.

Modern dreamwork involves interpreting your dreams so you can work through difficult issues with the wisest parts of your soul.

In fact, your dreams provide an opportunity for your subconscious to go to work on the troubles and lessons of the day and integrate them into your deeper mind.

Your dreams can serve as a form of emotional detoxification. In dreaming, you can break down highly reactive elements or join them with other complexes to elminate them, rendered them inert, or use them in another way.

However, many people remembering and maintaining focus in their dreams.

Luckily, mugwort helps in this area!

Why Use Mugwort for Dreamwork?

Mugwort is an amazing tool for if you have trouble sleeping.

It’s especially helpful if you wake up in the middle of the night and have difficulty falling back to sleep.

It does a great job at keeping you asleep.

You can mix mugwort with other herbs like:

  • Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora)
  • Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata), b
  • Betony (Stachys betonica)
  • Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca)

However, for me it works very well on its own.

Specifically, mugwort helps in dreamwork by:

  • helping you remember your dreams
  • introducing colors if you only dream in black and white
  • engaging other senses if your dreams are only visual
  • become lucid while dreaming if you already have good dream recall
  • allow you to actively manipulate the dream state if you are already a lucid dreamer

How to Use Mugwort for Dreamwork

There are several ways to use mugwort for dreamwork:

My favorite is a tincture.

I tried drinking mugwort tea and thought it tasted terrible! Even after sweetening it with honey, it tasted very bitter to me.

The tincture is also bitter, but all you need is a a dropperful. I found it much easier than drinking a whole cup of bitter tea.

Mugwort grows wild in the United States. If you are lucky enough to have some growing near you, you can wildcraft it. If not, it’s easy to find online.

To make a tea, simply:

  • measure out 1 tablespoon of mugwort per cup of water
  • boil your water
  • let the tea steep for at least 10 minutes
  • for a stronger mix (decoction), bring 1 tablespoon of mugwort per cup of water in a pan to a boil, then simmer for 15 minutes

It may take a couple times to find the strength that works best for you.

As I mentioned earlier, I think the tea tastes terrible. Don’t get me wrong, I love the effects of mugwort for dreamwork. Just not the taste!

So I prefer to make a tincture.
