Reiki for Cats: How to Perform Reiki on Your Cat

Introduction to Reiki for Cats

Reiki is a form of energy healing that has become increasingly popular for humans and animals in recent years. Reiki involves using the hands to channel healing energy to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and support the body’s natural healing processes. It is a gentle and non-invasive technique that can be particularly helpful for cats, who are often sensitive to stress and prone to various health issues.

Benefits of Reiki for Cats

Reiki can benefit cats in several ways. For example, it can help reduce stress and anxiety, which is especially important for cats who may be sensitive to changes in their environment or routine. Reiki also helps support the immune system, promote relaxation, and reduce pain and inflammation.

Reiki can also help to promote a sense of well-being and balance in cats. Cats receiving regular Reiki sessions may be more relaxed, playful, and engaged with their environment. Reiki can also help deepen the bond between you and your cat as you share a peaceful and healing experience.

Preparing for a Reiki Session with Your Cat

Before you begin a Reiki session with your cat, create a calm and peaceful environment. Find a quiet room where you and your cat can relax without distractions or interruptions. You may want to play soft music or diffuse quality essential oils to help create a calming atmosphere. My favorites to diffuse when working with cats are doTERRA Frankincense, Lavender, or Serenity. Use only 3 or 4 drops in the diffuser, as cats are sensitive to scents. Also, make sure your essential oils are safe for pets. Lower-quality oils may be extracted with solvents that can be toxic to pets.

Next, you will need to prepare yourself. Make sure you are relaxed and grounded. My favorite grounding meditation is the Tree Grounding Meditation.

It is also essential to ensure your cat is comfortable and relaxed. Ensure he/she has a comfortable place to sit or lie down and is not hungry or thirsty. You may want to offer some water or a treat before you begin the session.

Positioning Your Hands for Reiki on Your Cat

You will use your hands to channel healing energy when performing Reiki on your cat. You can use several different hand positions, depending on where your cat needs the most support.

First, please be aware that some cats like “hands-on” Reiki, while others prefer not to be touched. So, the first thing you will do is create a healing space for your cat.

Do this by sitting in a comfortable position and running Reiki energy. Envision Universal Life Force Energy entering through your crown and coming out through your hands, filling the space.

Pay attention to your cat’s response. Most cats will become curious and move towards you. Often, a cat will sniff your hand to see what’s happening. If your cat seems interested in and accepting of Reiki energy, try placing your hands a few inches above your cat and keep sending Reiki energy, in through your crown and out through your hands, to your cat.

Pay close attention to your cat’s response. You’ll be able to tell if your cat likes it or not. If your cat moves away, be patient and keep sending the Reiki energy. Cats are very sensitive to energy, and it often takes a while to get used to it. Your cat may walk away for a minute, then return for more. Sometimes, pets do so several times throughout an animal Reiki session.

If your cat enjoys “hands-off” Reiki, you are ready to try it “hands-on.”

To begin, gently place your hands on your cat’s head, with your fingers touching the top of its head and your palms facing down. You can also place one hand on its forehead and one hand on its chin or either side of its head.

Notice how she senses the energy at first and sniffs? This is when you’ll find out if the cat is accepting of Reiki or not. They will usually sniff and acknowledge. If she wasn’t accepting of the Reiki energy, she would have stiffened, possibly laid her ears back, and backed away.

Pay attention to your cat’s response. You’ll know if he/she likes it or not! If your cat isn’t interested in hands-on Reiki, continue with the hands-off method. Your cat will still get all the same benefits!

As you continue the session, you can move your hands down your cat’s body, using different hand positions to support various areas. For example, you can place your hands over your cat’s ears, heart, or belly. Follow your intuition and let your cat guide you where they need support most.

Channeling Energy to Your Cat

As you position your hands on (or off) your cat, focus on channeling healing energy through your hands and into your cat’s body. Visualize the energy flowing from your hands and into your cat, promoting relaxation, reducing stress, and supporting their natural healing processes.

You can also use affirmations or intentions to help guide the energy. For example, you might repeat phrases like “I send love and healing energy to my cat” or “May my cat feel calm and relaxed.” These affirmations can help to focus your intention and enhance the healing energy.

When performing Reiki, you must visualize your cat as happy and healthy. If your cat is ill or not feeling well, remember a time when your cat was feeling good and doing something he/she enjoyed. You always want to visualize the positive, not the negative, when performing Reiki.

Observing Your Cat’s Reactions

Keeping your cat’s reactions and responding accordingly is essential during the Reiki session. Some cats are very receptive to Reiki, relaxing and falling asleep during the session. Other cats may be more skeptical or uncomfortable with the process and try to move away or become agitated.

If your cat seems uncomfortable or agitated during the session, it is essential to respect their boundaries and stop the session if necessary. Reiki should never be forced upon a cat or used as a form of restraint.

Ending the Reiki Session

When you feel the Reiki session is complete, gently remove your hands from your cat’s body. Take a moment to thank your cat for sharing the healing experience with you.

You may want to offer your cat some water or a treat after the session and allow them to rest for a while. Taking care of yourself after the session is also essential, as you may feel relaxed and peaceful.

Repeating Reiki Sessions with Your Cat

Reiki is most effective when done regularly, so you may consider scheduling regular sessions with your cat. Depending on your cat’s needs, you may want to perform Reiki sessions once a week or more frequently.

Regular Reiki sessions can help to promote relaxation, reduce stress and anxiety, and support your cat’s natural healing processes. They can also help deepen the bond between you and your cat as you share a peaceful and healing experience.

Reiki can be an excellent tool for promoting relaxation, reducing stress and anxiety, and supporting the body’s natural healing processes for cats. By creating a calm and peaceful environment, positioning your hands to channel healing energy, and promoting relaxation and healing, you can provide a gentle and non-invasive form of healing for your cat.

Regular Reiki sessions can deepen the bond between you and your cat and promote a sense of well-being and balance. If you are not experienced with Reiki, it is best to find a qualified and experienced practitioner who works with animals. With patience, care, and attention, you can offer your cat a peaceful and healing experience through Reiki.

I highly recommend taking a Reiki 1 class if you’re not trained in Reiki. Anyone can do Reiki, but with training and attunement, you can channel more healing energy, making your Reiki sessions much more powerful.
